Lincoln

National Forest

03

Located in southern New Mexico, Lincoln National Forest encompasses over one million acres of land. I only spent three nights here, so I didn't have all that much time to explore. Since this is relatively close to Texas, I figured I could save it for another trip.

The grassy foothills of the mountains are as beautiful as the mountains themselves. Deer and elk can be seen grazing in the fields in the evening. There are also plenty of old logging roads and four-wheel drive trails. Finding hiking trails was a bit difficult, as they were not marked. However, with all the pubic land that you can freely explore, you don't really need a trail.

The city of Cloudcroft was a neat little town with plenty of restaurants, shops, and things like that. This area would be perfect for a family get away. It has something for everyone. You can even include White Sands National Monument, which is only a short drive west.

On my last night there, a cold front came through, dropping temperatures into the lower 20s. This made for a nerve-racking night as I wasn't sure if my travel trailer could hand the cold. But it did. And the next morning, the freezing fog that blew in over night made for a beautiful winteresque scene.

This area will be on my map for places to explore further.
